In this video extract, Prince Abbas Hilmi, a descendant of Mohamed Ali Pasha, the founder of modern Egypt, talks about his ancestor’s legacy and the historical ties between Turkey and Egypt. He explains that Mohamed Ali Pasha, although he was a Turk, had fully adopted Egypt as his country and initiated many reforms and projects that shaped its history and identity. He also mentions that the Mamlouk system of importing roughly 10,000 young mostly Turkish boys every year went on for 900 years and probably means that most people in Cairo are of Turkish origin. The short is an extract of a video presentation shown and produced by the Turkish Embassy in Cairo.
